Planet Social Sports

4/1/2009
My two worlds are about to collide and I'm going to be the one to do it. As I was browsing yelp, as I typically do on a daily basis and at the same time in a different firefox tab about to sign up for football, I decided to look up my football league on yelp. I can't believe planetsocialsports hasn't been reviewed yet.

What it is:
Basically, this guy Hazen had a good idea to get adults together to play team sports against each other and also go to bars after games to have some fun and drink too. Ok, he obviously did not invent the idea but he did successfully implement it in neighborhoods densely populated with young adults. It started in Santa Monica/Venice and has thus expanded to all kinds of cities like Pasadena, HB, Vegas, and even on the east coast.

Here's a blurb from the website: "Hazen's vision is to not only allow for the over 21 working professional to find an outlet from the static everyday hustle of work, bills, etc, but rather create a professional and social network that leads to the betterment of the local community and self.

The 9 week leagues, consisting of Touch Football, Kickball, Volleyball, Softball, and Bowling are all coed. Men and Women alike are able to join teams as individuals, free agents, or as a team. Corporate teams are allowed as well.

Planet Social Sports has quickly expanded within a year of its inception having leagues based in Santa Monica, Venice, Pasadena and Las Vegas. Its ability to grow so quickly can be attributed to the culture that Hazen and his staff have created. The focus is placed equally on the socializing afterwards as much as the outcome of the games.

Planet Social Sports partners with a local restaurants or bar to host post-game social activities. Where both the venue and the league benefit from working together to support local businesses."

My experience:
I've been playing football and softball in Venice for 7 seasons now? I'm not exactly sure how long but you get a colored t-shirt every season and I'm almost ready for a drawer dedicated to PSS shirts.

There are so many good reasons I love this league and I keep signing up season after season. I'm going to keep it short because otherwise the list could go on and on:
-people. i met a lot of new friends through the league. Almost everyone is in their 20s or 30s and one season we had over 20 teams in the football league.
-football. i heart football so much (kickball is also a really popular sport but i know there are a few other kickball coed leagues in the area)
-drinking. sponsor bar with flip cup and beer pong after games. Where else can you play beer pong in a bar with t-shirts and shorts on for 8 hours straight?
-team. All the sports have rules that really incorporate female players. I've played on teams in the past where it's basically guys playing and a few females just running around the field not touching the ball. so i love the integration, guys.
-diversity of sports. PSS really offers a wide array of team sports and they keep adding more teams and locations every year. you can play whatever you want even without knowing anyone by signing up as a free agent. they'll put you on a team.
-events/community. in addition to encouraging bar attendance after games, PSS also organizes more social events that really builds a sense of community. there's a pub crawl coming up and a reading to children ongoing community service events.

A few improvements/suggestions I have are:
-get a better website (one that is easier to navigate) and update it more frequently with schedules and dates. That's what most people go there for.
-I have nothing but love for the refs. They're all great guys and really fun. Buuut....... sometimes they're not the most detail oriented and are known for making bad calls. I've learned to just accept it and not argue because it all evens out in the end. Most likely the other teams will get calls they don't like either. (at least that's what I tell myself).
-price. $75 for 8 weeks of football that sometimes gets rained out and not rescheduled/last minute notice is a little steep.

Despite these flaws, I will continue to sign up for my sports league every season until 1) I'm too injured to play 2) i run out of money or 3) ...nothing else will keep me from signing up for football!
